Vio/Miré

Album art by Abi Griffith
I saw Vio Miré last night at the Bookmill in Montague, a "dream venue," as the band put it--it's this old mill over a waterfall in a tiny Western Massachusetts town, that's been turned into a bookstore, cafe, bar, and listening room.

FOLKS, this band has something real special going for it--quiet and riveting, with incredible lyrics and straightforward delivery, a regular swell of instrumentals and choice back up vocals  "oh"s--bursting, brief, staccato--and  "ah"s--long, fading, legatos (Yay, Emily Dix Thomas on cello and voice!). There is something of The Books about them, and maybe... ah, I hesitate to make comparisons. At any rate, I actually got in my car and listened to the band the whole way home.  Swish, as a friend of mine would say.

Also: This wolf drawing is brilliant.
